Introduction to Synthetic Genomics

In the past, one of the major challenges in biology was DNA sequence determination. Today, the development of next-generation sequencing technology has dramatically reduced sequencing time. The increasing number of genome sequences in public databases indicates that scientists are now doing well in reading genomes. However, the ability to write synthetic DNA sequences is also required to better understand the grammar of life. Recently, with the increased ability to synthesize longer DNA segments and the reduced cost of DNA synthesis, it has become possible to design and construct whole synthetic chromosomes in the megabase range, which also allows scientists to identify their functions in vivo. Synthetic genomics has opened up new paradigms for studying the fundamental principles of genomes and engineering novel biological functions.

As an intersection of synthetic biology and systems biology, synthetic genomics is defined as an emerging field of engineering and manipulating an organism's genetic material at the genome level. Synthetic genomics aims to genetically modify existing life forms, or create new organisms and biological systems through artificial gene synthesis to satisfy human needs. Techniques for generating chemically-synthesized genomes are incorporated into synthetic genomics, which allows for numerous simultaneous changes to the genetic materials. As a result, synthetic biology is becoming increasingly dependent on and integrated with synthetic genomics.
