Introduction to Translational Synthetic Biology Genomics

Synthetic Biology is an emerging scientific discipline that intends to create novel combinations towards practical applications by engineering biological systems from both pre-existing and novel parts. Artificial gene synthesis is a major tool of synthetic biology for achieving from conceptualized DNA sequences to the corresponding physical DNA used to construct various biological components. Synthetic biology integrates several established and developing technologies to enable the engineering of proteins, pathways, or even whole organisms using modular designs and formats. Computational aided design approaches and rational engineering concept are introduced into biology to rapidly deliver useful applications. Although synthetic biology has usually been used to answer questions in basic research, it is now ready to greatly enhance translational research.

The future will inevitably move from ‘standard parts’ to ‘standard pathways’ to enable the rapid and efficient installation and expression of genetic modules on demand to construct more complex systems for practical applications. Over time, synthetic biology has been increasingly applied to a wide range of human health applications and the development of novel drugs. Several translational applications of synthetic biology include the development of new synthetic pathways for drug screening and biosynthesis, the construction of novel diagnostics and vaccines, and the creation of engineered viruses and microbes to fight human disease. These, together with other novel translational applications of synthetic biology, have the opportunity to make significant advances in improving human health.
