Precision fermentation is the process by which microorganisms undergo genetic modification and then ferment to produce organic molecules. Precision fermentation technology is typically applied to genetically engineered microorganisms such as yeast, bacteria, and algae to produce fats or proteins that are biologically similar to plant and animal products. As a complementary technology to conventional fermentation and biomass fermentation, precision fermentation technology can be used to make enzymes, most vitamins, insulin, natural flavors, and animal-free dairy products. Although precision fermentation usually occurs in fermenters and is not affected by climate change, the challenge of obtaining high quantities of purified end products through the development of precision fermentation processes remains a pressing one.
Precision fermentation is an important subset of synthetic biology, with major steps involving raw materials, genetic engineering, fermentation scale-up, extraction, and products. The development of precision fermentation processes around the above steps is an important way to advance synthetic biology.
