Introduction to Mammalian Cell Engineering

The original goal of synthetic biology is to develop biological systems for a wide range of applications, ranging from drug discovery and medical applications to industrial, agriculture, and environmental applications. Engineering principles have been applied to synthetic biology to reprogram living cells for novel and improved functions. Mammalian cell engineering is a powerful tool in synthetic biology to reassemble biological components from different organisms into user-defined genetic networks, which can restore, improve, or add essential functions to cells.

With the rapid improvement in the culture and engineering of mammalian cell systems, its importance has been recognized. Taking the expression of recombinant protein as an example, the increase in quantity, quality, and complexity of recombinant proteins largely depends on the ability to engineer mammalian cells. The emerging new synthetic approaches together with a better understanding of cell systems obtained through omics approaches contribute to more flexible and faster mammalian cell engineering.
