B4GALT4 Knockout Cell Lines

Gene: B4GALT4

Official Full Name: beta-1,4-galactosyltransferase 4provided by HGNC

Gene Summary: This gene is one of seven beta-1,4-galactosyltransferase (beta4GalT) genes. They encode type II membrane-bound glycoproteins that appear to have exclusive specificity for the donor substrate UDP-galactose; all transfer galactose in a beta1,4 linkage to similar acceptor sugars: GlcNAc, Glc, and Xyl. Each beta4GalT has a distinct function in the biosynthesis of different glycoconjugates and saccharide structures. As type II membrane proteins, they have an N-terminal hydrophobic signal sequence that directs the protein to the Golgi apparatus and which then remains uncleaved to function as a transmembrane anchor. By sequence similarity, the beta4GalTs form four groups: beta4GalT1 and beta4GalT2, beta4GalT3 and beta4GalT4, beta4GalT5 and beta4GalT6, and beta4GalT7. The enzyme encoded by this gene appears to mainly play a role in glycolipid biosynthesis. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Background

B4GALT4 Gene Knockout Cell Lines are specialized, genetically engineered cell lines designed to facilitate the study of the B4GALT4 gene, which encodes a critical enzyme involved in glycosylation processes affecting cellular signaling and adhesion. These cell lines have undergone precise genome editing to disrupt the expression of the B4GALT4 gene, allowing researchers to explore its functional roles and the biological ramifications of its loss.

The key function of B4GALT4 involves the synthesis of specific glycan structures on glycoproteins and glycolipids, which are essential for various cellular interactions and signal transduction pathways. By utilizing B4GALT4 Gene Knockout Cell Lines, researchers can elucidate the underlying mechanisms of how altered glycosylation affects processes such as cell proliferation, differentiation, and immune responses, ultimately enhancing our understanding of pathologies, including cancer and developmental disorders.

Scientifically, these knockout cell lines hold significant value in both research and clinical settings. They serve as powerful tools for investigators studying diseases linked to aberrant glycosylation patterns and can aid in the development of targeted therapies. Furthermore, the insights gained from these studies can lead to novel biomarkers for disease prognostication and therapeutic responses.

Compared to traditional cell lines that express the B4GALT4 gene, our knockout cell lines offer a unique advantage by providing an unambiguous genetic background for experimental manipulations. This specificity allows for clearer interpretation of results and reduces the confounding variables often encountered in studies involving wild-type cell lines.

Researchers and clinicians can greatly benefit from utilizing the B4GALT4 Gene Knockout Cell Lines, as they provide a reliable model for dissecting the functional capacity of glycosylation in multiple biological contexts, laying the groundwork for innovative therapeutic approaches.
