Gene: KRT16
Official Full Name: keratin 16provided by HGNC
Gene Summary: The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the keratin gene family. The keratins are intermediate filament proteins responsible for the structural integrity of epithelial cells and are subdivided into cytokeratins and hair keratins. Most of the type I cytokeratins consist of acidic proteins which are arranged in pairs of heterotypic keratin chains and are clustered in a region of chromosome 17q12-q21. This keratin has been coexpressed with keratin 14 in a number of epithelial tissues, including esophagus, tongue, and hair follicles. Mutations in this gene are associated with type 1 pachyonychia congenita, non-epidermolytic palmoplantar keratoderma and unilateral palmoplantar verrucous nevus. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

KRT16 Gene Knockout Cell Lines represent a significant advancement in biological research, providing a powerful tool for the study of keratin expression and skin-related pathologies. These cell lines are genetically modified to disrupt the KRT16 gene, which plays a crucial role in the formation of intermediate filaments within epithelial cells, ultimately influencing structural integrity and cellular response to stressors. By utilizing CRISPR-Cas9 technology, the knockout mechanism is precise, ensuring a uniform absence of KRT16 expression across the cell population.
The primary function of KRT16 Gene Knockout Cell Lines lies in their ability to facilitate the investigation of keratinocyte biology, particularly in relation to skin diseases such as palmoplantar keratoderma, psoriasis, and other keratinopathies. The absence of KRT16 enables researchers to dissect signaling pathways that are influenced by keratin dynamics, thus offering insights into cell proliferation, differentiation, and response to environmental stimuli. In clinical settings, these cell lines can be utilized for drug screening and for evaluating therapeutic approaches aimed at restoring normal cellular function.
Compared to other cell lines, KRT16 Gene Knockout Cell Lines offer unique advantages, including their specificity for skin-related research and their representation of a pathophysiological context that closely mimics human disease. The ability to analyze responses to various treatments in a controlled, genetically relevant system enhances the reliability of experimental outcomes and paves the way for innovative therapeutic strategies.
For researchers and clinicians, these cell lines are invaluable as they provide a mechanism to further understand skin biology and develop targeted interventions. The ease of use and reproducibility of experiments using KRT16 knockout lines make them a favored choice in both academic and pharmaceutical research settings.
