GABRD Knockout Cell Lines

Gene: GABRD

Official Full Name: gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptor subunit deltaprovided by HGNC

Gene Summary: Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian brain where it acts at GABA-A receptors, which are ligand-gated chloride channels. Chloride conductance of these channels can be modulated by agents such as benzodiazepines that bind to the GABA-A receptor. The GABA-A receptor is generally pentameric and there are five types of subunits: alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and rho. This gene encodes the delta subunit. Mutations in this gene have been associated with susceptibility to generalized epilepsy with febrile seizures, type 5. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described for this gene, but their biological validity has not been determined. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Background

GABRD Gene Knockout Cell Lines are custom-generated cellular models in which the GABRD gene, responsible for encoding the delta subunit of the GABA receptor, has been selectively disrupted. This innovative approach allows for the precise study of GABAergic signaling pathways and their modulation, providing insights into the role of this gene in various neurobiological processes and disorders.

These knockout cell lines function by utilizing CRISPR-Cas9 technology to effectively silence the expression of the GABRD gene. This gene is known to contribute to the functionality of GABA receptors, which are crucial for inhibitory neurotransmission in the central nervous system. By examining cellular responses, neurotransmitter uptake, and receptor pharmacology in these knockout models, researchers can elucidate the mechanisms underlying excitatory and inhibitory balance in the brain, ultimately leading to better understanding of conditions such as epilepsy, anxiety, and schizophrenia.

The scientific importance of GABRD Gene Knockout Cell Lines extends into both research and clinical applications. They are invaluable tools for drug discovery, facilitating the identification of novel therapeutics targeting the GABAergic system. Furthermore, these cell lines can be instrumental in biomarker identification and validation processes associated with psychiatric and neurological disorders, enhancing the translational potential of research findings.

Compared to traditional cell lines, the GABRD Gene Knockout Cell Lines offer a targeted approach that minimizes background variability and focuses on specific pathways of interest. Their genetic validation ensures reliability in experimental outcomes, making them superior for research applications where precision is paramount.

Using GABRD Gene Knockout Cell Lines not only empowers researchers and clinicians to conduct high-quality, impactful studies, but it also accelerates the journey from understanding fundamental biology to developing effective interventions.
