Overview

Porphyromonas gingivalis is a gram-negative bacterium associated with adult periodontitis. The lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a characteristic component of the cell wall of gram-negative bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis. It differs in structure and various functions from lipopolysaccharide derived from Escherichia coli. Studies have shown that lipopolysaccharides derived from Escherichia coli and Porphyromonas gingivalis have different regulatory mechanisms for the surface expression of cluster of differentiation 14 (CD14), toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2), and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), as well as for the primary and secondary cytokine responses.
