CD68 Knockout Cell Lines

Gene: CD68

Official Full Name: CD68 moleculeprovided by HGNC

Gene Summary: This gene encodes a 110-kD transmembrane glycoprotein that is highly expressed by human monocytes and tissue macrophages. It is a member of the lysosomal/endosomal-associated membrane glycoprotein (LAMP) family. The protein primarily localizes to lysosomes and endosomes with a smaller fraction circulating to the cell surface. It is a type I integral membrane protein with a heavily glycosylated extracellular domain and binds to tissue- and organ-specific lectins or selectins. The protein is also a member of the scavenger receptor family. Scavenger receptors typically function to clear cellular debris, promote phagocytosis, and mediate the recruitment and activation of macrophages. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcripts encoding different isoforms. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Background

CD68 Gene Knockout Cell Lines represent a revolutionary tool in biological research, specifically designed to enable the study of macrophage function and differentiation. CD68, a membrane glycoprotein predominantly expressed in macrophages and some other cell types, plays a crucial role in the immune response, particularly in phagocytosis and the processing of antigen. By utilizing gene knockout technology, these cell lines provide researchers with a means to investigate the direct impacts of CD68 deletion on cellular processes and immune interactions.

The key functionality of CD68 Gene Knockout Cell Lines lies in their ability to provide a controlled environment for assessing the biological effects of CD68 absence. By creating an environment devoid of CD68 expression, researchers can observe changes in macrophage behavior, cytokine secretion, and interaction with pathogens or other immune cells, thereby revealing insights into immune mechanisms and potential disease states.

The scientific significance of these cell lines extends into various fields, including immunology, cancer research, and therapeutic development. In clinical settings, understanding the role of CD68 may pave the way for novel treatments targeting macrophage behavior in diseases characterized by immune dysfunction, such as chronic inflammation and cancer.

Compared to alternative models, such as conventional cell lines or primary macrophage cultures, CD68 Gene Knockout Cell Lines offer superior specificity and reproducibility. These cell lines maintain consistent genetic backgrounds, thus reducing variability in experimental outcomes, and they can be easily manipulated for further genetic studies or compound assays.

For researchers and clinicians alike, CD68 Gene Knockout Cell Lines provide an invaluable resource for elucidating the complexities of the immune system, facilitating breakthroughs in understanding macrophage biology. Unlocking the potential of these cell lines can lead to enhanced therapeutic strategies and improved patient outcomes.
