Gene: PODXL
Official Full Name: podocalyxin likeprovided by HGNC
Gene Summary: This gene encodes a member of the sialomucin protein family. The encoded protein was originally identified as an important component of glomerular podocytes. Podocytes are highly differentiated epithelial cells with interdigitating foot processes covering the outer aspect of the glomerular basement membrane. Other biological activities of the encoded protein include: binding in a membrane protein complex with Na+/H+ exchanger regulatory factor to intracellular cytoskeletal elements, playing a role in hematopoetic cell differentiation, and being expressed in vascular endothelium cells and binding to L-selectin. PODXL Gene Knockout Cell Lines are genetically engineered cell lines that have been specifically modified to silence the expression of the Podocalyxin-like protein (PODXL), a key molecule involved in cellular processes such as migration, adhesion, and tumor progression. These knockout cell lines facilitate the study of PODXL's role in various biological systems, particularly in cancer research, by providing a controlled environment where the effects of its absence can be analyzed.
The primary function of these cell lines lies in their ability to allow researchers to observe changes in cellular behavior, signaling pathways, and gene expression profiles without the interference of PODXL. This is achieved through targeted gene editing techniques, such as CRISPR/Cas9, which effectively disrupt the PODXL gene. By utilizing these cell lines, scientists can investigate the mechanistic pathways associated with tumor biology, stem cell maintenance, and renal development, thus broadening the understanding of how altered PODXL expression impacts these processes.
The scientific importance of PODXL Gene Knockout Cell Lines is evident in their application across both fundamental research and clinical settings. They offer invaluable insights into the pathology of various diseases, including cancers where PODXL is often upregulated, and they can assist in the development of targeted therapies. Furthermore, these cell lines have the potential to be used in drug discovery, enabling researchers to assess the efficacy of therapeutic compounds that may target PODXL-related pathways.
Compared to alternative models, such as wild-type cell lines or patient-derived xenografts, PODXL Gene Knockout Cell Lines provide a more precise tool for dissecting the function of this specific gene without the variability introduced by other genetic factors. This specificity not only enhances the robustness of experimental results but also facilitates reproducibility across multiple studies.
