Overview

Akkermansia muciniphila (A. muciniphila) is a Gram-negative, anaerobic, non-motile, non-spore forming, and oval bacterium. LPS from A. muciniphila stimulates the production of embryonic cell alkaline phosphatase (SEAP) through TLR4 in a NF-κB-dependent manner. Furthermore, it induces IL-8, IL-6, and very little IL-10 and TNF-α in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Stimulation of intestinal cells by A. muciniphila to produce IL-8 has been shown to be significantly lower than that by E. coli (100-fold). The low pro-inflammatory activity maintains the mucosal-associated immune system at appropriate levels to produce mucosal homeostasis.
