Gene: RAB8A
Official Full Name: RAB8A, member RAS oncogene familyprovided by HGNC
Gene Summary: The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the RAS superfamily which are small GTP/GDP-binding proteins with an average size of 200 amino acids. The RAS-related proteins of the RAB/YPT family may play a role in the transport of proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi and the plasma membrane. This protein shares 97%, 96%, and 51% similarity with the dog RAB8, mouse MEL, and mouse YPT1 proteins, respectively and contains the 4 GTP/GDP-binding sites that are present in all the RAS proteins. The putative effector-binding site of this protein is similar to that of the RAB/YPT proteins. However, this protein contains a C-terminal CAAX motif that is characteristic of many RAS superfamily members but which is not found in YPT1 and the majority of RAB proteins. Although this gene was isolated as a transforming gene from a melanoma cell line, no linkage between MEL and malignant melanoma has been demonstrable. This oncogene is located 800 kb distal to MY09B on chromosome 19p13.1. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

RAB8A Gene Knockout Cell Lines are genetically modified cell lines specifically engineered to lack the expression of the RAB8A gene, which encodes a small GTPase involved in intracellular vesicle trafficking. These cell lines serve as vital tools for investigating the role of RAB8A in cellular processes such as membrane transport, organelle formation, and signal transduction pathways. By elucidating the functional consequences of RAB8A deletion, researchers can gain insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying various pathologies, including cancer metastasis and neurodegenerative diseases.
The key function of RAB8A protein revolves around its regulation of vesicle movement along the cytoskeleton, facilitating the transport of proteins and lipids to their destination within the cell. In the absence of RAB8A, marked alterations in cellular trafficking dynamics can be observed, influencing processes such as cell migration, cytokinesis, and secretion. These knockout cell lines allow researchers to model these alterations, thereby providing a rich context for the study of cellular responses to physiological and pathological stimuli.
The scientific importance of RAB8A Gene Knockout Cell Lines extends well into both research and clinical settings. In research, these models can be utilized for high-throughput screening of potential drug candidates targeting related pathways. Clinically, understanding RAB8A’s role can lead to therapeutic advancements in diseases where vesicular trafficking is disrupted.
What sets RAB8A Gene Knockout Cell Lines apart from conventional cell lines is their specificity and versatility. These lines are not only optimized for easy use in various assays—including migration and invasion studies—but also come with comprehensive characterization data, ensuring reliability in experimental applications.
Researchers and clinicians looking to advance their understanding of vesicular transport and its implications in disease will find exceptional value in these knockout models. They provide a platform for innovations in therapeutic strategies, including targeted gene therapy and novel pharmacological interventions.
