Overview

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a pyrogenic element caused by enterobacteria such as Escherichia coli and intestinal Salmonella. It is an amphipathic component containing polysaccharides and lipid substances. LPS is present in the outer membrane of the cell wall of almost all Gram-negative bacteria. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is the characteristic component of the cell wall of Gram-negative bacteria. LPS and its lipid A component can stimulate innate immune system cells through Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), which is a member of the Toll-like receptor protein family, capable of recognizing common pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs).
