LGALS3 Knockout Cell Lines

Gene: LGALS3

Official Full Name: galectin 3provided by HGNC

Gene Summary: This gene encodes a member of the galectin family of carbohydrate binding proteins. Members of this protein family have an affinity for beta-galactosides. The encoded protein is characterized by an N-terminal proline-rich tandem repeat domain and a single C-terminal carbohydrate recognition domain. This protein can self-associate through the N-terminal domain allowing it to bind to multivalent saccharide ligands. This protein localizes to the extracellular matrix, the cytoplasm and the nucleus. This protein plays a role in numerous cellular functions including apoptosis, innate immunity, cell adhesion and T-cell regulation. The protein exhibits antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants.[provided by RefSeq, Oct 2014]

Background

LGALS3 Gene Knockout Cell Lines are genetically engineered model systems designed to facilitate the study of the galectin-3 gene (LGALS3) by disrupting its function. These cell lines enable researchers to investigate the biological roles and molecular pathways associated with LGALS3, a member of the galectin family, which is implicated in various physiological and pathological processes, including immune response, cancer progression, and fibrosis.

The key function of LGALS3 Gene Knockout Cell Lines lies in the targeted loss of galectin-3 expression, leading to alterations in cellular signaling and behavior. By leveraging CRISPR-Cas9 or other gene-editing technologies, these cell lines exhibit a complete knockout of the LGALS3 gene, allowing researchers to examine changes in proliferation, apoptosis, and metabolic activity in a controlled environment. This mechanistic insight is crucial for elucidating the gene's role in diseases and developing potential therapeutic strategies.

In terms of scientific importance, LGALS3 is recognized for its involvement in tumorigenesis and immune modulation, making these knockout cell lines essential tools for cancer research and immunology studies. They provide a platform for evaluating novel therapeutic agents that target galectin pathways and for assessing the gene's function in drug resistance mechanisms and inflammatory responses.

Compared to traditional cell lines, LGALS3 Gene Knockout Cell Lines offer unique advantages such as a reliable and reproducible model for gene function studies, significantly reducing background noise associated with off-target effects. Additionally, these cell lines can be utilized in high-throughput screening for drug discovery and development processes, enabling more efficient advancement from bench to bedside.

For researchers and clinicians dedicated to understanding the complex biology of galectin-3, these knockout cell lines serve as invaluable assets in their investigations. By obtaining precise gene manipulation, scientists can drive innovative discoveries and enhance translational applications aimed at improving patient outcomes.
