Gene: IL18
Official Full Name: interleukin 18provided by HGNC
Gene Summary: The protein encoded by this gene is a proinflammatory cytokine of the IL-1 family that is constitutively found as a precursor within the cytoplasm of a variety of cells including macrophages and keratinocytes. The inactive IL-18 precursor is processed to its active form by caspase-1, and is capable of stimulating interferon gamma production, and of regulating both T helper (Th) 1 and Th2 responses. This cytokine has been implicated in the injury of different organs, and in potentially fatal conditions characterized by a cytokine storm. In humans, IL-18 gene is located on chromosome 11. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.[provided by RefSeq, Aug 2020]

IL18 Gene Knockout Cell Lines are specialized cellular models that have undergone targeted gene editing to selectively disable the IL18 gene. IL18, a pro-inflammatory cytokine, plays a crucial role in the immune system by orchestrating responses to infection and contributing to inflammation. By utilizing advanced CRISPR/Cas9 technology, these cell lines allow researchers to study the functional consequences of IL18 absence, providing insights into its role in various biological processes, such as innate immunity and autoimmune diseases.
The key mechanism underlying the utility of IL18 Gene Knockout Cell Lines lies in their ability to facilitate the investigation of the cytokine's downstream signaling pathways and its impact on immune cell activation. Researchers can observe how the absence of IL18 affects cellular responses to stimuli, including pathogenic challenges, thus uncovering potential therapeutic targets for inflammatory diseases. Moreover, these models enable the evaluation of gene function in both basic research and drug discovery contexts, contributing significantly to our understanding of immunological diseases and therapeutic strategies.
From a scientific perspective, the importance of employing IL18 Gene Knockout Cell Lines in research is underscored by their capacity to reveal novel insights into inflammation and immune modulation, paving the way for advancements in treatment modalities for conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, and certain cancers. The advantages of using these cell lines include their reproducibility, specificity, and the extensive characterization that accompanies their production, making them a reliable choice for experimental studies compared to alternative models.
