Gene: COX11
Official Full Name: cytochrome c oxidase copper chaperone COX11provided by HGNC
Gene Summary: Cytochrome c oxidase (COX), the terminal component of the mitochondrial respiratory chain, catalyzes the electron transfer from reduced cytochrome c to oxygen. This component is a heteromeric complex consisting of 3 catalytic subunits encoded by mitochondrial genes and multiple structural subunits encoded by nuclear genes. The mitochondrially-encoded subunits function in electron transfer, and the nuclear-encoded subunits may function in the regulation and assembly of the complex. This nuclear gene encodes a protein which is not a structural subunit, but may be a heme A biosynthetic enzyme involved in COX formation, according to the yeast mutant studies. However, the studies in Rhodobacter sphaeroides suggest that this gene is not required for heme A biosynthesis, but required for stable formation of the Cu(B) and magnesium centers of COX. This human protein is predicted to contain a transmembrane domain localized in the mitochondrial inner membrane. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. A related pseudogene has been found on chromosome 6. [provided by RefSeq, Jun 2009]

COX11 Gene Knockout Cell Lines are specialized cellular models engineered to exhibit a precise deletion of the COX11 gene, which encodes a mitochondrial protein involved in the assembly and function of cytochrome c oxidase, a critical component of the oxidative phosphorylation pathway. These knockout cell lines serve as indispensable tools for investigating the cellular mechanisms underlying mitochondrial dysfunction, energy metabolism, and apoptosis.
The primary function of COX11 is to facilitate the assembly of respiratory chain complexes that are essential for ATP production through oxidative phosphorylation. By creating specifically-targeted COX11 knockout cell lines, researchers can elucidate the role of COX11 in mitochondrial biogenesis, respiratory chain integrity, and related metabolic pathways. This enables a deeper understanding of mitochondrial pathologies, which are implicated in various diseases such as neurodegenerative disorders, metabolic syndromes, and cancer.
The scientific importance of COX11 Gene Knockout Cell Lines extends to both basic research and translational applications. They provide a controlled environment for assessing the functional consequences of COX11 deficiency, allowing for the exploration of drug candidates aimed at mitigating mitochondrial dysfunction. Moreover, these models facilitate the investigation of potential therapeutic strategies for conditions associated with mitochondrial defects.
Compared to alternative models, such as transient gene knockdown systems or conventional wild-type cell lines, COX11 knockout cell lines offer the advantage of stable, heritable mutations that yield consistent and reproducible results. This reliability is paramount for experimental rigor and can lead to more accurate data interpretation.
For researchers and clinicians engaged in mitochondrial research or therapeutic development, COX11 Gene Knockout Cell Lines represent a valuable asset. They empower investigations that hold potential for innovative solutions to tackle diseases rooted in mitochondrial dysfunction.
