Gene: ALDH7A1
Official Full Name: aldehyde dehydrogenase 7 family member A1provided by HGNC
Gene Summary: The protein encoded by this gene is a member of subfamily 7 in the aldehyde dehydrogenase gene family. These enzymes are thought to play a major role in the detoxification of aldehydes generated by alcohol metabolism and lipid peroxidation. This particular member has homology to a previously described protein from the green garden pea, the 26g pea turgor protein. It is also involved in lysine catabolism that is known to occur in the mitochondrial matrix. Recent reports show that this protein is found both in the cytosol and the mitochondria, and the two forms likely arise from the use of alternative translation initiation sites. An additional variant encoding a different isoform has also been found for this gene. Mutations in this gene are associated with pyridoxine-dependent epilepsy. Several related pseudogenes have also been identified. [provided by RefSeq, Jan 2011]

ALDH7A1 Gene Knockout Cell Lines are genetically engineered cell lines that have been specifically designed to lack the ALDH7A1 gene, which encodes the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase 7 family member A1. This enzyme plays a critical role in cellular metabolism by facilitating the detoxification of aldehydes and the metabolism of neurotransmitters, such as gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). The absence of the ALDH7A1 gene provides researchers with a powerful tool to study its function and implications in various biological and pathological processes, particularly in the context of neurodegenerative diseases and metabolic disorders.
The primary function of these knockout cell lines lies in enabling the exploration of cellular pathways that involve aldehyde metabolism and detoxification. By examining the differences in cellular behavior and metabolic responses between ALDH7A1 knockout and wild-type cell lines, researchers can elucidate the gene's specific functions and its contribution to disease mechanisms. This can be particularly valuable in preclinical studies aimed at developing therapeutic strategies for disorders linked to oxidative stress and aldehyde accumulation.
Scientific importance fluttering around ALDH7A1 has grown exponentially due to its potential implications in relevant clinical conditions such as pyridoxine-dependent seizures and peripheral neuropathy. Researchers can utilize these knockout models to investigate the underlying molecular pathways and to test potential pharmacological interventions, thereby accelerating the translation of basic research findings into clinical applications.
Compared to traditional cell lines or gene silencing techniques, ALDH7A1 Gene Knockout Cell Lines offer several advantages. They provide a complete and stable absence of the target gene, ensuring consistency and reliability in experimental outcomes. Additionally, these cell lines can serve as more accurate models, representing disease states where ALDH7A1 deficiency is implicated, which allows for better comprehension of gene-function relationships.
For researchers and clinicians, the ALDH7A1 Gene Knockout Cell Lines represent a valuable asset in understanding the intricate workings of aldehyde detoxification and its role in health and disease. By integrating these innovative tools into their research, scientists can potentially pave the way for novel therapeutic approaches.
