AFP Knockout Cell Lines

Gene: AFP

Official Full Name: alpha fetoproteinprovided by HGNC

Gene Summary: This gene encodes alpha-fetoprotein, a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac and the liver during fetal life. Alpha-fetoprotein expression in adults is often associated with hepatocarcinoma and with teratoma, and has prognostic value for managing advanced gastric cancer. However, hereditary persistance of alpha-fetoprotein may also be found in individuals with no obvious pathology. The protein is thought to be the fetal counterpart of serum albumin, and the alpha-fetoprotein and albumin genes are present in tandem in the same transcriptional orientation on chromosome 4. Alpha-fetoprotein is found in monomeric as well as dimeric and trimeric forms, and binds copper, nickel, fatty acids and bilirubin. The level of alpha-fetoprotein in amniotic fluid is used to measure renal loss of protein to screen for spina bifida and anencephaly. [provided by RefSeq, Oct 2019]

Background

AFP Gene Knockout Cell Lines are tailored cellular models specifically engineered to lack the expression of the alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) gene. This genetic alteration creates a robust platform for investigating the role of AFP in various biological contexts, particularly in oncological and developmental biology research. The knockout technique utilizes CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, a precise method that ensures the complete ablation of the AFP gene, allowing researchers to study the resultant phenotypic characteristics and molecular pathways that may be influenced by the absence of this protein.

The key function of AFP Gene Knockout Cell Lines lies in their ability to provide insights into the multifaceted roles of AFP, especially its involvement in liver development, regeneration, and its aberrant expression in hepatic malignancies. By facilitating the examination of cellular proliferation, differentiation, and signaling pathways in the absence of AFP, these cell lines serve as vital tools in the quest to understand hepatocellular carcinoma and other liver diseases.

In research and clinical settings, the significance of these cell lines is profound. They contribute to the understanding of tumor immunology, the development of novel therapeutic strategies, and the verification of FDA-approved drugs targeting AFP-positive tumors. Furthermore, these cell lines enable scientists to explore potential diagnostic markers related to liver disorders.

What sets AFP Gene Knockout Cell Lines apart from alternatives is their unparalleled specificity and reliability, generated using cutting-edge CRISPR technology, which minimizes off-target effects. Their robust adaptability across various experimental conditions further enhances their utility. Researchers, clinicians, and pharmaceutical companies can leverage these cell lines to accelerate drug discovery and develop personalized medicine approaches, particularly in hepatology.
