Gene: ABCC5
Official Full Name: ATP binding cassette subfamily C member 5provided by HGNC
Gene Summary: The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the superfamily of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. ABC proteins transport various molecules across extra- and intra-cellular membranes. ABC genes are divided into seven distinct subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White). This protein is a member of the MRP subfamily which is involved in multi-drug resistance. This protein functions in the cellular export of its substrate, cyclic nucleotides. This export contributes to the degradation of phosphodiesterases and possibly an elimination pathway for cyclic nucleotides. Studies show that this protein provides resistance to thiopurine anticancer drugs, 6-mercatopurine and thioguanine, and the anti-HIV drug 9-(2-phosphonylmethoxyethyl)adenine. This protein may be involved in resistance to thiopurines in acute lymphoblastic leukemia and antiretroviral nucleoside analogs in HIV-infected patients. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2016]

ABCC5 Gene Knockout Cell Lines are genetically engineered cells that have undergone targeted deletion of the ABCC5 gene, which encodes a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter family. This family of proteins is primarily involved in the transport of various molecules across cellular membranes, playing crucial roles in the metabolism and excretion of drugs as well as endogenous compounds. The ABCC5 protein, in particular, is implicated in the transport of nucleoside triphosphates and is believed to contribute to the efflux of chemotherapeutic agents, thereby influencing drug resistance in cancer.
The primary function of ABCC5 Gene Knockout Cell Lines lies in their ability to facilitate detailed studies of the gene's role in cellular physiology and pharmacology. By removing the ABCC5 gene, researchers can investigate changes in drug disposition, resistance mechanisms, and the overall impact on cellular signaling pathways. These cell lines serve as invaluable tools in drug discovery and development, allowing for the evaluation of therapeutics that may interact with the ABCC5 transporter, thereby providing insights into potential combination strategies to overcome resistance.
In research and clinical applications, the relevance of ABCC5 is underscored by its association with various diseases, including cancer, where enhanced knowledge could lead to more effective treatment protocols. Traditional methods of studying gene function often involve laborious processes, but the availability of knockout cell lines streamlines experimentation, enabling researchers to focus on high-throughput analyses with reproducible results.
The advantages of using ABCC5 Gene Knockout Cell Lines over conventional models are multifaceted. These specialized cell lines offer a controlled environment with consistent genetic background, reducing variability in experiments and allowing for clearer interpretation of data. Furthermore, the manipulation of the ABCC5 gene positions these cell lines as robust platforms for translational research aiming to develop personalized medicine approaches.
The value of ABCC5 Gene Knockout Cell Lines is apparent for researchers and clinicians dedicated to understanding drug resistance, cellular transport mechanisms, and therapeutic applications. By integrating these innovative tools into their studies, users can advance their work with greater precision and efficiency.
