However, the natural origin of non-ribosomal peptides is extremely limited in quantity and the methods of isolation and extraction are inefficient. In addition, non-ribosomal peptides with complex structures are difficult to produce by conventional chemical synthesis methods. All these issues have led to a significant hindrance in the development of an engineered production platform for non-ribosomal peptides. As an emerging engineering technology, synthetic biology can create an efficient, well-characterized, and sustainable synthetic system for producing non-ribosomal peptides.
